Variety
Fish: Students painted and printed bubble wrap for the background then cut various sizes of fish to place within their ocean!
Kites: Students listened to "Let's Go Fly a Kite" and wave a kite in the air to the song. They chose warm or cool colors for their sky and painted using water colors. The kites were made from textured paper made during our Eric Carle lesson and they cut various sizes of kites to add to their sky.

Art Club students working on creating a community project. Each student in the school created a dot for National Dot day. The art club students cut the dots in fourths and arranged them in a variety of ways onto tiles. They then arranged the tiles onto a large panel which unified all of the shapes.

Go Away Big Green Monster: For this project, students read "Go Away Big Green Monster" and recreated the monster from the story. To create the head, students folded a paper in half and painted one side, then squished the paper together, creating mirror symmetry.
Movement
The Great Wave off Kanagawa: Students looked at the Great Wave by Japanese artist Hokusai. Students made waves of movement and added boats between the waves.
Movement Lines: Students glued two colored strips together and cut 3/4 in one direction. They folded the cuts different directions and glued them onto black paper in a way that move the viewer's eye from place to place.
Keith Haring figures: Students discussed how Keith Haring showed movement through this active figures and motion lines. Students positioned moveable figures and traced their motion. They then added lines around the figure on top of their rhythmic shapes.

Starry Night: Students looked at Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night. We discussed how his brush strokes showed movement. Students used Q-tips on aluminum foil and printed the swirls onto paper.
Cave art: Students selected various animals found during the paleolithic era. Students used chalk pastel and crumpled their paper to make a rock-like texture. The Art Show featured a large cave to display all of these fine cave artists' work!
Rhythm
Students picked a sea creature and created an environment using tissue paper. They stamped the sea creature many times to show Rhythm.
Jackson Pollock Weaving: Students learned about the famous Action painter Jackson Pollock and how his work shows Movement and Rhythm. They picked three colors to splatter and repeated one of those colors with their second paper, weaving them together.
Kente Cloth: Students looked at the colorful Kente cloth from Africa. They cut paper into different lengths and arranged them onto the paper to show Rhythm.
Pop Art Hands: Students looked at Pop Art by Andy Warhol and observed how he repeated the same image many times using different colors. These students traced and cut their hand four times, then printed their hand on top. I love the colors!
Pattern
|
|
Beach scene: Students painted a pattern for the waves, then cut out the flip flops. They then decided what pattern to create on the flip flops and glued sandpaper to the bottom. They are adorable!
Bubble Wand: After learning about pattern, students used beads and pipe cleaners to make a bubble wand. Since it was around Valentine's day, we made them into hearts for extra fun!
African Necklace: Students looked at necklaces of the Samburu tribe from South Africa. We looked at the patterns and painted layers with the details applied with Q-tips. These necklaces can be worn!
Emphasis
Magritte Eye: Students learned about Surrealism and looked at Rene Magritte's work, particularly "The False Mirror." Students were asked to think about something they enjoy looking at and to draw emphasis to the iris of the eye.
