Life: Sometimes it's a Game!
This lesson was part of the Saturday Morning Art Workshops at Messiah College. I collected various board games that were well-known and had interesting pieces. The students were asked to select pieces from games that evoked a memory from their childhood experience playing games with family or friends. An adaptation for students that have not grown up playing board games were challenged to somehow represent themselves and to create a composition from their selected pieces. They learned about different types of shading using cross-hatch, hatching, stippling, and organic lines and shaded their objects using these techniques. These symbolic portraits were displayed for the parents and public to view at the end of the four weeks.
