Mary Cassatt Portraits
The 3rd grade classes learned about the artist Mary Cassatt and Impressionism. They were given a selection of images from her work of young children and their mothers. Many students chose to reproduce a girl in a red hat. The students were shown how the Impressionist artists used short brush strokes and encouraged to give this texture within the clothing of their subject. They were given freedom with the background to create any kind of pattern or texture they chose. This truly gave each work a unique and individual look despite the similarity in subject matter!
